Located in the east of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyards ( Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Petit Verdot 8%) lie on deep gravel beds underpinned by clay and then sandstone and limestone (part of these vineyards actually reside in the St-Julien appellation). Pichon-Longueville Lalande is a 75-hectare property that produces on average 36,000 cases per year. This is largely due to the energy, drive and ambition of May-Eliane de Lenquesaing, who took over the property in 1978. ![]() Winemaker Nicolas Glumineau has overseen a quite wonderful Pichon-Lalande, one with inbuilt longevity.Ĭhâteau Pichon-Longueville Lalande is one of the most important Super Seconds and this 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate has made tremendous strides in the last 20 years. It will develop more complexity and personality with bottle age, but at the moment you can sit back and just admire the cohesion and superb length. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the Merlot content lending this Pauillac its trademark fleshiness and roundness, yet there is clearly structure here (not always a trait of this Pauillac growth). Neal Martin - Wine Advocate - #218 - Apr 2015The 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has an expressive bouquet with lively blackberry, cedar, flint and graphite aromas that are not powerful, yet display admirable precision. Under Nicolas Glumineau, this Pauillac estate is really beginning to "motor" and this is an excellent wine, one within touching distance of the First Growths. The Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive and dominates the Merlot at the moment, although the Merlot is essentially counterbalancing what might have been a much more austere Pichon-Lalande. The palate is medium-bodied with a tense, graphite-tinged opening, a fine line of acidity (pH 3.72) and a silky smooth finish. It has a very pure and precise bouquet with a light marine influencing the black cherries and blueberry fruit. Although the grapes, barrels, and classifications that gave the cru its unique character are not overlooked, the book focuses primarily on the strong and often surprising personalities of those who brought the vineyard to the great heights it enjoys today. The Château Pichon-Lalande 2014 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot picked over five weeks between 16 September and 20 October. Told through the eyes of the people who built Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande over three centuries, the story is accompanied by new photographs of the chateau and portraits of its inhabitants. And it is the story of a grand cru that has had a strong female presence since its early days, being run by a number of remarkable women at a time when men dominated the business. ![]() It is intertwined, too, with the legacy of the great family of Pichon-Longueville, which is tinged with drama and romance. This fascinating book tells the story of the vineyard, a tale that is tied to the very origins of the Médoc winemaking tradition. She presided over what would become one of Bordeaux’s greatest vineyards and gave it the name it retains to this day. To make an “unforgettable wine”: This was the dream and, eventually, the lifework of Virginie de Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, who lived in the French region of Médoc in the 1700s.
